Kanata is a large suburban community in the western part of Ottawa. It is one of the largest of several communities that surround the city. Kanata is a planned community and an important hi tech centre. Modern Kanata is largely the creation of Bill Teron, a developer and urban planner.
Kanata Neighborhoods
South March:
Is located north of the Kanata North Business Park on either side of March Road. The development along the west side of March Road is referred to as Morgan’s Grant, while the development along the east of March Road is referred to as BriarBrook, BriarRidge and Brookside
Kanata North Business Park:
Often referred to as Silicon Valley North during the 1990s, this area is bordered by Terry Fox Drive to the north, Herzberg Road to the east and March Road to the south. Many high-tech companies reside in this area. The 18-story, luxury Brookstreet Resort Hotel is located in the middle of the KNBP, surrounded by the Marshes Golf Club. Unlike the members-only Kanata Lakes Golf & Country Club, the Marshes is open to the public.
Kanata Lakes:
This area is borded by Campeau Drive to the south, Knudson Avenue & Weslock Way to the east, Terry Fox Drive to the west and north. Kanata Lakes features the second of two golf courses in Kanata. Unlike the Marshes Golf Course in the Kanata North Business Park, this course is members only.
Beaverbrook:
Borded by the Kanata North Business Park to the north, March Road to the east, Campeau Drive to the south and Knudson Avenue & Weslock Way to the west. This was the first neighborhood in Kanata.
Kanata Town Centre:
South of Beaverbrook with March Road to the east, Katimavik Road to the south and Terry Fox Drive to the west. North of the highway, the area has a mix of town and stacked homes. South of the highway, there is again a mix of residential, institutional and commercial spaces. To the west the residential homes switch from townhomes to single family.
Terry Fox Business Park:
Scotiabank Place is located in this neighborhood within Kanata, as well as many newer big-box stores such as Home Depot, Staples, Canadian Tire and Costco. The Bell Sensplex is also locatedhere, providing Kanata with an Olympic sized rink, three NHL sized rinks and an indoor soccer/lacrosse field.
Katimavik-Hazeldean:
Borded by Katimavik to the north, Eagleson to the east and by Hazeldean to the south.
Kanata West:
A new development under construction north of Hazeldean and south of Scotiabank Place along the Stittsville/Kanata boundary.
Glen Cairn:
Borded by Hazeldean to the north, Eagleson to the east and the Trans Canada Trail to the south. Terry Fox Drive is the western border of Glen Cairn.
Kanata South Business Park:
Many smaller high-tech companies make this area their home. Most land here was undeveloped until recently.
Bridlewood:
Borded by the National Capital Commission Green Belt to the north and east, Hope Side Road to the south, and Eagleson to the west. Bridlewood makes up the eastern most portion of Kanata.
